The Best Gites in France – Part 1


Taking a well-deserved family holiday in France is many people’s dream, and by staying in a gite your experience could be fantastic. Gites are famous for the homely comfort the accommodation provides, and the home-from-home atmosphere the French owners instil on their properties. However, some gites now offer luxury accommodation and facilities that you would never dream of a gite providing, in this blog we look at some of the finest gites in France.

L’Hermenault – Western Loire

Located in the Western Loire, the location could not be more stunning. This gite has three bedrooms and has its own fully equipped kitchen, barbeque, terrace and patio furniture. The gite looks out on 2.5 acres of beautiful and carefully manicured landscaped gardens. So, there are plenty of great places to sit in the shade and read your favourite novel. Further down from the gardens is a lake which offers some great fishing. Shared facilities include a spacious outdoor swimming pool, and unusually also a good sized indoor heated pool. There is a barn offering all manner of games and also a TV lounge, you can even try your hand at the popular French game boules.

Le Noyer – Brittany

Not everybody wants to stay in the heart of the countryside and this picturesque stone cottage in in the ancient town of Restemblaye Lenn which is itself set in superb countryside containing exciting wildlife. The gite is superbly appointed with modern fixtures and fittings and at its heart is a wonderful heated pool, with a six-person hot tub. The gite has a large garden to relax and easy al fresco and guests can take full advantage of a big outdoor games area containing boules, volleyball and badminton. The gite is situated next to a walking trail which leads down to a beautiful lake and some excellent scenery.

La Girardiere – Deux Sèvres

If your group is particularly large, then this gite is ideal, as it has 8 rooms and can accommodate up to sixteen people. The 19th Century stone farmhouse is quaint and highly atmospheric, and offers tradition, charm and a whole lot of comfort. La Girardiere is set in its own five acres of land, and all around the gite are magnificent nature trails with outstanding views. The premises have its own swimming pool together with a safe kid’s play area and a boules pitch. The barn is central to La Girardiere where guests can meet up each evening for dinner and a glass or two of wine. A gas barbecue, hotplate and deep fryer are all available to prepare meals and for entertainment there is a table tennis and football table. The gite is close to many canals in the Deux Sevres, and there are many places that punts and small canal boats can be hired to view the wildlife and many wild flowers.
